When you buy a new bag, the question arises again: how do I store my bag properly? And this is exactly the subject where opinions often differ.
Many of us decorate our wardrobe treasures and that is understandable, as they are our "babies". Whether as a gift for the birth of a child, passing a degree or reaching a planned savings goal, every bag has its own little story.
I have seen many variations and believe me, some of them made my hair stand on end. The worst was a lady who had crammed all her bags into large plastic boxes. Prada, Dior and Armani were all squashed together in this box without a dust bag and without any protection. After opening it, I was shocked to see that the leather had deep creases that could no longer be removed as they had mutated into cracks, patent leather that had undergone a color transfer and much more. I don't even want to talk about the smell...
The fact was that this was a huge loss.
What makes sense now?
The best way to protect it from unwanted dust is to use the dust bags that come with the bag, as they do what they are supposed to do - they protect the bag from dust, but they don't look very decorative in an open wardrobe. I would recommend avoiding plastic materials and boxes, as leather cannot breathe in plastic and this has been proven to encourage the formation of mold, thus creating more problems instead of helping.
Most of my treasures are kept in a dust bag. Patent leather bags, on the other hand, I keep in their dust bag with a ventilated cardboard box. Why? Because my biggest concern is the color transfer and there is no way to remove it. Once it has soaked into the patent leather, you can never get it off again.
Now what about the form?
Let's be honest, most people stuff them with tissue paper, newspaper or plastic wrap, but this often results in nasty dents because too much is stuffed in, or the bag starts to smell because the plastic wrap has sweated.
One thing is also clear: a bag that loses its shape, develops creases and dents that are difficult to remove over time, is no longer attractive. And that really annoys us!
I stuffed my bags with a small pillowcase filled with wadding, which isn't bad at all but it's not very stylish... :D
But now there are some really great and stylish solutions for this.
Franzi & Max from Sac x Ami have taken on the problem and created super elegant bag pads in a timeless design. I tested them myself and am very impressed - a full-grip pad in a sturdy but soft leather that has the shape my bag needs. They offer us the perfect storage for our bags. Really great!
